Reading Whole Systems Approach to Healthy Weight Strategy (2026-2036)

The Reading Whole Systems Approach to Healthy Weight Strategy (2026-2036) sets out a shared vision for creating a healthier Reading, where all residents have the opportunity to achieve and maintain a healthy weight throughout their lives. Recognising that healthy weight is influenced by a wide range of social, environmental, economic and commercial factors, the strategy adopts a whole systems approach, bringing together partners across local government, health and care services, education, community organisations, businesses and local residents. Our vision is for “A healthier weight and life for everyone across Reading, where partners and communities take system-wide action to enable all residents to live healthier lives through environments and opportunities that are shaped locally to meet their needs.”

The strategy focuses on prevention, reducing health inequalities, and creating environments where healthy choices are easier to make. Alongside the strategy, the Initial Implementation Plan (2026-2028) sets out the first phase of delivery, identifying priority actions, lead organisations and opportunities for partnership working across themes including healthy food, physical activity, healthy environments, workforce development, community engagement and system leadership. The implementation plan will support coordinated action and collective accountability for improving healthy weight outcomes across Reading.
